Born in Austria and now living in Milan, Marc is a truly global designer having lived and worked in cities as diverse as New York, Hong Kong and Taiwan amongst others.  Having gained his esthetique industielle (industrial design) diploma in Paris in 1968, Marc founded Deco design in 1969 and   joined group France design in 1970.  During these early years, collaborations flourished with leading fashion brands including Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent before a skiing accident and love for the sport pushed him to find a design led solution to reduce the risk of similar accidents.  The result, the first completely recyclable thermoplastic rubber ski boot, was commercialised by Italian firm Caber (latterly known as Lotto) and ultimately led to the patenting of a Ski-boot with a symmetrical shell, a design which for many years was the biggest selling ski-boot in the world.

These early forays into the sporting world gave Marc a reputation as a leading sports designer and led to closer collaborations with global sports brands such as Reebok and Nike both in the field of sports shoes but also for equipment such as tennis racquets and golf clubs.  Further huge commercial success followed in the sporting and apparel arenas during the late 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s with sought after designs for leading brands such as Dianese, Ellesse and Nike some of which remain popular even today.

Working within the sporting sector gave Marc greater access to pioneering research into materials and techniques and in particular to the plastics for which he holds a particular affinity.    Having chosen plastics as the subject for his thesis at Paris he has experimented greatly with the material during his life as a leading designer. Indeed his various offices have often been referred to as ‘plastic carpentry’ laboratories and material libraries with work areas surrounded by shelves with books and objects relating to his inspirations.

Although he has maintained his strong relationship with the sports industry his focus since moving to Italy in the 1990’s has been the lighting and furnishing industry.    Marc has successfully transferred the technical knowledge gained during his work within the sporting sector to the furnishing industry and his work now includes extensive collaborations with, amongst others, Foscarini and latterly with Ideal Standard for whom he is the art director.

Marc’s work has repeatedly been recognised in the design world through numerous international awards including the Compasso d’Oro award for the Drop lamp (Flos 1994), Tita and Mite lamps (Foscarini 2001), the Big bookshelf (Caimi Brevetti, 2008) and the Bellevue display unit (IFI,2014).  In further recognition of his work, several of Marc’s designs are also featured in permanent design collections including the MOMA in New York and Beaubourg in Paris.

Aside from the prolific success of his designing Marc now also lectures at various schools of design and universities both in Italy and around the world including the European Design institute in Milan and the Royal College of Art in London.
